About us
We are a small eco-community striving to be as self-sustainable and green as possible. Some of us are involved in the Transition Town movement and it is our goal to combat climate change, prepare for a future without oil and educate people about such matters.
Carthvean Farm belongs to Julie & Andrew, who are an amazing Buddhist couple with a story too long to share here. They share their house with Steven, Sharon, Erin and Ayla. Jane lives in her own caravan, and Spike & Andy live in the mobile home. You’ll learn more about us all in the blog. At the moment we all work in exchange for rent and pay whatever we are unable to work.
We grow a lot of our own fruit and veg in our smallholding field which includes outdoor veggie beds, 2 polytunnels and a fruit cage for soft fruit. We also have an apple & pear orchard. We have a veggie coop which consists of a small group of friends – we all work a certain amount of hours a week in exchange for a portion of the fruit and veg.
We keep bees for honey, to pollinate our plants and to help keep the bee population from dying – as our world would be in big trouble without these amazing creatures.
We keep all of the animals because they’re gorgeous and we love them, but some have a purpose too: alpacas for fleece and breeding; llamas for future llama trekking; pygmy goats because they’re small and fun; miniature southdown sheep because they’re small and funny (and we sometimes breed with them); hens -some for eggs, some because they’re pretty; cats & dogs (because we love ‘em); Golden Guernsey goats for milk & their loveliness;mules who are going to carry packs & pull carts for a future without oil;and a horse – for riding, training, etc
We have many thoughts, plans and dreams which will be revealed in the blog!
